What type of hay do I feed my alpacas?
Alpacas are browsers...this means they like to eat a bite of this and bite of that... a grassy patch, a clover patch, some leaves and ooooh that loooks good , on to another herb.
If you are limited in pasture, or its just off season and pasture is unavailable, the best source of hay is a varied one. A fine early cut grassy 1st cut, a fine and soft 2nd , 3rd and fourth cuts are great. The trick is to get a few bales of many types of hay, for example , a thin blade grass bale , a wide leaf blade grass bale , some with clover or some with more alfalfa and vary their diet a bit. I've noticed that they will eat a new flake of a different hay with gusto . Alpacas love variety as they are browsers by nature. This means that in their natural habitat on the Altiplano they will travel quite a distance to eat what they need. here on the farm where their travels are limited to the pastures we manage its up to us to provide the variety they crave to keep them healthy.
